Back Packing Campout Activities

This campout is designed to provide Scouts with an opportunity to learn backpacking skills, as well as to complete certain Camping MB and Wilderness Survival MB requirements as well as Trail to First Class skills and activities.

ANY SCOUT OR ADULT PLANNING TO ATTEND PHILMONT IS STRONGLY ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND. This will provide an opportunity to get familiar with and test backpacking gear. Information and sources to purchase or rent backpacks and related gear will be provided in advance of the campout.

All campers must pack their personal gear to campsite.

Non-backpackers do not require packs, but must carry ALL gear (including Personal First Aid Kit) to campsite. Don’t bring more than you can carry for over a mile.

Camp Meisenbach will not allow vehicles to the campsite (except truck pulling the trailer with troop and patrol gear).

Hiking schedule will be flexible to allow for trail conditions and breaks.

March 27, 2005 (rev 3.0)

Dear Scout Parent,

Troop 81 will be having our annual family camp at Bonham State Park. This camp is a highlight of the year as family members join the Scouts to observe the skills they have learned and participate in family oriented activities. Brothers, sisters, grandparents and friends are all welcome to join this family campout.

The camp begins with lunch on April 16 and finishes before lunch on Sunday, April 17th.

If you and your family would like to spend an additional night Friday night, at no additional charge, you are welcome to do so, but no troop activities are planned before Saturday lunch. The state park offers comfortable indoor, heated, dormitory-style cabins and a large, warm meeting/dining hall.

The only drawback to this camp is that there are a limited number of beds…94.

Reservations will be accepted based on full payment received for the campout. Please fill out the form below and turn it in to John Benavides with your payment for the camp.

A schedule of planned activities will soon be sent out.

Just a few items to know:

1. Directions to Bonham State Park.

a. Take US 75 north

b. Take exit #45, turn right onto State Highway 121 (go 33.1 miles)

c. Continue on W SAM RAYBURN DR (State Highway 56)

d. [At this point you can use the attached map]

e. go 1.5 miles southeast of Bonham on State Highway 78 to FM 271,

f. then two miles southeast on FM 271;

g. enter on Park Road 24

2. Transportation to the park is by family group. There is no caravan. If you need to arrange transportation, please contact another family who is going, since Troop 81 will not be responsible for transporting scouts. If your scout is traveling with another family, make sure that he is carrying a medical release to allow treatment if he is injured while traveling. Copies can be obtained from John Benavides.

3. Lunch and dinner on Saturday and breakfast Sunday morning are provided and will be prepared for you. Volunteers to help in the kitchen are always welcome.

4. Even though we are staying in cabins, it can get cool in April, so bring warm clothes and a sleeping bag or warm blanket. We have a large indoor facility for dining and other activities in case of rain, but do bring rain gear and comfortable shoes that can get muddy, just in case.

5. Dress for Scouts will be class A and class B. Dress for the families is always casual.

6. You may want to bring a lawn chair for the outdoor activities in the afternoon and campfire in the evening.

7. Enclosed is a map to Bonham State Park and a map of Bonham State Park. The park’s Web site is http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/park/bonham .

We are looking forward to a fun weekend. Please call me at 972-235-2751 or email me at john_benavides@comcast.net if you have any questions. See you there!

Winter Camp Information

This campout is similar to Summer Camp in that several troops from around Texas participate and approximately 400 boys are at the camp. Winter camp staff teaches some merit badges and there will be a few merit badges taught by troop 81 adults. A list of available merit badge classes is included below. This is also a good opportunity for boys participating in TFC activities, rank advancements and selected other merit badges to get signoffs on various outdoor requirements.

The camp also has several outdoor themes such as the Indian village and Mountain Man areas that demonstrate many early camping and outdoor skills such as leatherwork and lumber jack methods. A supervised climbing tower and rifle/shotgun range are located on the camp and horseback riding is also available.

Merit badge class are schedule before lunch and activity areas are open to every one after lunch (this includes climbing tower, shooting ranges, Indian craft area, mountain man and lumber jack areas). Special Events include: Opening Campfire, Indian Pow Wow, Rocket shoot-off, Troop competitions (Cook-off, Gateways, Great Sled Race, ICE Sculpting, etc.) Polar Bear Swim December 30 at first light and Closing Campfire.

Cold weather conditions are usually present during some or all of the winter camp duration and a short meeting to review cold weather camping information is planned for Monday, Dec 19, at 7PM. Troop 81 adults and scouts will prepare all food in a family style manner with the cooking done at the campsite -- a duty roster will be used to ensure that everyone receives an ‘equal educational opportunity’ for cooking and cleaning.

Also, visit miki.org for additional winter camp information.

Cost: $100.00 per scout –includes basic camp fees and all food.

Additional fees required for some activities (see merit badge list below). There are two camp trading posts

Special Instructions:

On Saturday morning, scouts and adults will have a chance to earn a “Polar Bear” swim patch; if you are interested bring a swim suit.

An additional hand out provides information on cold weather camping and a suggested packing list.

Adult training available includes:

· Safe Swim/Safety Afloat – Dec 28th

· Youth Protection Training – Dec 28 th

· Climb On Safely training – Dec 28 th

The following T81 merit badges are planned:

Astronomy, Pioneering, Other TBD

T81 TFC activities will be accomplished on an individual need basis (BRING YOUR BOOK).

T81 will set up a large Army tent to provide protection during the week.
